When I started this project a few days ago, Construct 3 was the first game engine I looked in to. I have since checked out RPG Maker and GameMaker. For the sake of what I’m doing, and what I want to accomplish, I will put Construct 3 on the back burner. The other two engines are better for story telling and text-oriented games. Also, I like the pricing situation better. Most things have free versions, but I’m the kind of person who likes a one-time fee if there’s any kind of purchase. Construct 3 offers a monthly plan, and I don’t like that route. Maybe you’re different. I don’t know. Either way, I don’t expect to update this page as often as the others. It might just sit as is. You can check out the other pages by scrolling to the bottom, clicking “my projects”, then finding RPG Maker or GameMaker.

1 minute in:
So this guy has a challenge to create a Google Play game off the bat. The game involves throwing knives into a circle of hay. If you hit a knife already in the hay, your score starts over.
Immediately, I signed up for Construct 3 to follow along. I started their tutorial. It didn’t involve hay or knives, but I went about it. Their tutorial involved a little pig which has to run over tomatoes. The tutorial has gone well, and I’m ready to watch the next level.
Construct 3 is free up until a point. It gives you 50 “events” to start. Making a tomato disappear when touched was an event. Having the character turn left when the left arrow key was pressed was another event. The same for turning right. For this simple tutorial, it cost 3 events. When all original fifty events are gone, you can pay for a subscription. I believe it’s $9.99 per month, but I’m not positive. I’ll come back when I know for sure, and I’m not sure if it’s unlimited, or if there’s a certain amount of events that you purchase.
Either way, I’m a couple of hours into my quest to create a game. It’s gone well, and it’s easy enough. On my “projects” page, I included a video which said it gets harder and harder, depending on how serious you are about making a good game. Pong might be easy to re-create, but definitely not Final Fantasy. To watch that video, click here .

after watching all 30 minutes:
The video was quite helpful. It’s quite technical, and he glosses over procedures. However, “learning by osmosis” is expected, and you can always pause an re-watch certain parts. Overall, I rated it 5.5 out of 10. Instead of continuing with Construct 3 videos, I might move on to RPG Maker. I’m sure I’ll toggle between the two engines in the coming days.
========
added note: It’s $9.99 per month for educational purposes, and $15.99 per month for personal use. There is a free trial. Of course like most things, there are also many add ons like asset packs. I will likely keep checking out Construct 3, but it looks like I’m going with RPG Maker for my first game engine.

The last video game I created was in 2020. It was the Covid year, and I was living in Seattle. I was a regular poster at LoP and I based characters from that website. The game was called Covid-21, and basically the virus mutated the point that most of humanity turned into zombies. The goal was to make it to the Dooms Day bunker before the zombie horde arrived.
